What is photojournalism?

Based on my definition, photojournalism can be defined as the art of communicating a story or information through photography. Photojournalism can also be defined as a method of retelling a story which would have been told through magazines or newspapers in previous years to have the audience understand and experience the emotions felt. Nowadays, photojournalism can be accessed through mobile phones, computers, laptops or tablets. Due to photojournalism, it has become easier to read articles and magazines because of the images provided. Through photojournalism, an individual should be able to understand and feel the emotions that are being conveyed through the picture.
As the years go by, the use of magazines and newspapers have constantly decreased. This is where photojournalism steps in. Due to the constant use of mobile phones and access to the internet, individuals most especially teenagers and young adults have the most access to photojournalism, however it is not appreciated as much as it should and because it is seen daily people tend to forget just how important and useful it is. Photojournalist James Nachtwey explains in the video War Photographer" about just how photojournalism can be the perfect antidote to war once people realize just how important it is and how effective it is.
Like Ken Burns says in the video History, people tend to forget the word history contains ‘story’”. There is always a hidden story to the beginning. In regards to Photojournalism,  it is important to know how it came about. The roots of photojournalism can be traced to war. According to the video “into to photojournalism”, Professor Nordell explains in the video What is photojournalism? that photojournalism can be traced to Mathew Bradly’s photographs from the civil war. It was a means to convey a message of what was going on while the soldiers fought the battles. By the second half of the 19th century, the field began to expand beyond war and disaster photos and slowly made its way to the monthly magazines on the streets of London.By the year 1876, Street Life in London revolutionized their field by using images as the dominant means of storytelling.
