Chapter Three: The Art of Photojournalism
Year Created: 1863
Rule of thirds
The photographer placed the main subject in the center of the image which is the first thing the audience notices followed by the other bodies behind. The main subject is horrible but the other bodies show the audience just how terrifying the whole event must have been.
Depth of field
The right amount of area which is the field is most definitely in focus and it takes up more than half of the image before it transitions into the sky. The photo shows the shallow depth of field because it is obvious that the much bigger however the photographer could not take it all in one shot.
The obvious main subject,
The man subject is much bigger than those in the background but not too big that all the attention is solely on it. If certain images were taken out such as the bodies in the background then the severity of what emotion of fear and severity of what occurred will be gone.
Why did I choose the image?:
I chose this image because of the fear and sadness that comes with it. The photo was obviously taken after a war and while the winning side was celebrating, this image had the power to show what had occurred and how much people had to lose their lives.

Subject’s Expression Does the subject look relaxed?
The subjects face looks relaxed and lost in thought. It does not appear to the posed. This photograph was taken without the knowledge of the woman who is the main subject. This is proven because her body matches her facial expression.
Keep it simple
The photograph is slightly clustered due to the two children which I believe are the woman’s children., However, there is just enough space to understand what is going on in the image.
In or out of focus
This image is pretty sharp even though it's black and white. It is sharp enough for the audience to see the wrinkles on the face of the woman as well as the clothing is worn by both mother and children indicating that they were of low income. This is what sparks the feeling of sadness in the audience The sharpness of the image and how that helps to create the feeling or overall effect. Was
Why did I choose the image?
I chose this image because of how simple yet touching it is to see a mother worried about her children and how their lives will play out. Although black and white are the only form the image could have been I believe with colors, it will liven up the image which contradicts the emotions of the audience that the image would have impacted.

Is the image black & white or color
This image is black and white as it was taken during an era where only black and white images could be used. The impact of this image. The image impacted me proudly and fearfully. To see a man who genuinely loved his job which is photojournalism and feels the need to share what was going on during the genocide with the world makes me proud. However, fear was planted in me because of how much he chooses to risk his life.
What feelings does the image create?
The image created a sad feeling to see people ducking to avoid being shot. However, I also feel happy that people are willing to share what is going on with the rest of the world rather than ignoring it and preventing that it does not exist. This image has a shock-startle value and you can continue to see more in it. It is shocking because the cause of why the man is running away is unknown to us but must be very important since every journalist sees the need to capture the moment.
Background compliments or detract from the composition
The background both compete for attention as well as help complete the picture. From afar it helps complete the picture and leaves the audience curious as to what is so important that all the journalist decided to capture the moment but it also detracts because it is blurry and due to inquist minds the audience would want to figure out what is at the back.
Are there things in the background that compete for attention or do they help complete the picture. Is the background in or out of focus (depth of field)?
Why did I choose the image?
I chose this image because the photograph was taken when something dramatic happened which is why so many journalists are taking a picture in the image.

Use of shadows
The shadows in this image add a warm and relaxing feel for the audience. It makes it a more calming environment. Although, the shadow could be viewed as a main subject, it does not take up all the attention.
What feelings does the image create?
The feeling created by this image is relaxing and breathtaking. It makes the audience wish they were able to sit down and experience the view in the image. The large lake and chairs add to the feeling. The image is quiet and has a more lasting impact making the audience just stare and continue to find more in it.
Quality of Light
The light is set perfectly to give a great view of the lake and trees beyond but to also cast a shadow of the tree to make it look relaxing. It is not dramatic or surprising but rather calming and relaxing.
Why did I choose the image?
I chose this image because of how calm it is and although there are various main focus such as the colorful chairs towards the right and the person seated in the center, it does not capture all the attention.
